Sea transportation, which is the most common mode of transportation in the field
of international trade, requires the conclusion of contracts such as transportation
between the operator and the sender of the goods, ship rental, letter of credit etc.
In this regard, many documents such as bills of lading are used, which are mainly
physical and subject to risks. Many natural and legal persons and government and
private institutions have tried to modernize this process, and these efforts have
contributed greatly to the shortening of transportation time and better
implementation of contracts. Blockchain technology is one of the emerging
technological technologies that has gained popularity in the economic field. By
using this technology, the security in international contracts will be maintained for
the parties, and also the maritime transportation system can be checked in blocks
from the beginning to the end. The present study deals with the legal investigation
of the use of this technology in relation to the stages of sea transportation, legal
effects and upcoming challenges. And also we intend to measure the possibility of
implementation of blockchain in Iran by exploring international legal foundations
such as conventions and model laws.
