The concept of sovereignty in the tradition of modern political thought has always maintained a foundational relationship with theological concepts. Carl Schmitt, through formulating the theory of secularization within the framework of political theology, made a serious effort to represent this fundamental relation between modern politics and Christian theology. Within this context, Thomas Hobbes—one of the founders of modern state theory—becomes the central target of Schmitt’s critique. According to Schmitt, Hobbes's strict division between the private and public spheres marks the starting point of a process that neutralizes and ultimately undermines absolute sovereign authority. This article offers a detailed examination of the relationship between miracle, the state of exception, and the place of faith in Hobbes’s theory, alongside Schmitt’s critical interpretation thereof. It argues that Schmitt, in his attempt to restore sovereign authority within the state of exception, seeks to reintroduce the intervening God into the realm of politics. The paper then turns to Giorgio Agamben’s theoretical framework and his fundamental critiques of Schmitt’s theory, showing how the notion of the state of exception—despite its seemingly critical stance—ultimately serves as a basis for establishing an exception-driven, unstable, and violent order in which political society is erased, and only bare life remains.
