The right to development in the era of globalization is a multifaceted and dynamic concept that calls for a critical reassessment of international policymaking, trade regulatory frameworks, and the governance strategies adopted by states and transnational institutions. In confronting the dual nature of globalization its challenges and opportunities countries must implement effective mechanisms to uphold a balance between economic growth, justice, and national sovereignty. Recognized as a fundamental principle of human rights, the right to development is regarded as an indivisible entitlement aimed at advancing social justice and human dignity through sustainable means. Globalization has intensified the multilayered economic, social, and political interactions among states and transnational actors, generating new capacities for cooperation and development. Yet this integration has also led to the concentration of wealth, structural dependency among developing economies, and diminishing national autonomy in decision-making processes. This article undertakes a critical analysis of the right to development by examining its normative evolution within international legal discourse and exploring its practical realization in the context of globalization. It addresses three central questions: How has this right been defined and reinterpreted in international law? What are the implications of globalization for its implementation in the Global South? And what legal, economic, and institutional barriers continue to obstruct its fulfillment? By deploying an interdisciplinary and analytical approach, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the tensions and prospects that shape the pursuit of development as a human right in an interconnected world.
