The phenomenon of “pride in crime” is an unusual manifestation of criminal behavior in which the individual not only feels no remorse for committing a crime but also considers it a source of pride, power, or superiority. This attitude is considered a manifestation of psychological neutralization techniques and a form of value inversion, which contradicts ethical principles and social norms. It can impede the effective rehabilitation of offenders and may even undermine the deterrent function of punishment.
The objective of this research is to analyze the psychological and criminological characteristics of offenders who boast of their crimes, to explain the factors contributing to this phenomenon, and to examine the challenges faced by the justice system in handling their cases. The research method is descriptive-analytical, with data collected from library resources.
Theoretical findings indicate that the emergence of pride in crime is typically the result of an interaction across three levels. First, the psychological level, which is associated with traits such as narcissism, antisocial behavior, and a weak moral conscience. Second, the social level, where deviant environments reinforce criminal values. And third, the cultural level, where certain subcultures regard law-breaking as a sign of courage. The interplay of these levels complicates decision-making for courts in cases involving such individuals.
The results of this analysis can be utilized in designing preventive policies, reforming the attitudes of offenders, and developing effective rehabilitation programs within the criminal justice system.
